TAFB Community Nutrition Programs offers training to SNAP-eligible populations to develop the cooking, nutrition and food budgeting skills they need to make healthful and economical food choices. Volunteer nutritionists assist in teaching 4-week Cooking Matters At Home-Virtual courses and provide nutrition expertise by participating in cooking demonstrations in an online setting.
Responsible to: Tarrant Area Food Bank Staff; Class Participants
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Follows the goals and objectives outlined for each lesson in the curriculum and will implement the curriculum using an online format.
- Provides educational and stimulating opportunities for hands-on learning in the kitchen.
- Serves as a positive role model, inspiring participants to cook more meals at home and presenting easy, enjoyable and fun ways to eat nutritiously.
- Picks up ordered groceries, divvy items per recipe, and deliver to sites on the day of class.
- Tracking class attendance weekly and reporting information to Tarrant Area Food Bank staff.
Time Required:
- Volunteers spend travel time to and from the grocery store, site, and TAFB each week and must arrive at least one half hour before the class time is scheduled to begin. A volunteer can expect to spend at least 4 hours per week on the class.
- Volunteers are expected to check in with Tarrant Area Food Bank staff after the class each week and at least 5 days before next class in order to review recipes and discuss issues related to class.
What You Can Expect From the Program:
- Tarrant Area Food Bank staff will meet with you initially to help you get acquainted with the curriculum. The staff will also help you understand what to expect from the group you will be teaching.
- Tarrant Area Food Bank staff will be available to meet with you at any time to discuss any questions you might have about the program.
Desired Qualifications and Skills:
- Professional nutrition experience or current nutrition student.
- Certification and/or familiarity with ServSafe or an equivalent food safety and sanitation program
- Familiarity and/or experience with our target audience and with their particular needs.
- Willingness to teach and speak in front of a group.
- Willingness to be flexible, patient, and understanding of participants.
