Purpose: Interpreters for garden workshop facilitate learning for participants who speak English as a second language. Interpreters work with the class instructor, use the provided instructor guide and their professional experience to provide a valuable learning experience. Program participants gain the knowledge, skills, and confidence to improve their gardening knowledge and food budgeting skills. This results in improved eating habits and reduced food insecurity.
Responsibilities:
- Assist Instructors by converting concepts in the source language, typically English, to equivalent concepts in the target language
- Relay the style and tone of the original language
- Render spoken messages accurately, quickly, and clearly
- Be a positive role model for healthy choices
- Requests for written translation may occur occasionally
Qualifications & Skills:
- Verbal and written fluency in English and Spanish
- Ability to join in-person workshops at Pine Tree Community Garden (4512 Pine Tree Cir, Fort Worth, TX 76248)
- Interest in working with low-income individuals from diverse backgrounds
- Willingness to work with a TAFB staff and volunteers
- Prior experience in public speaking or education is desirable
- Degrees, certifications, and prior work experience as an Interpreter is desirable
Training & Supervision:
- Brief meeting (virtual or in person) with workshop instructor to discuss lesson and materials
Time Commitment:
- Workshops require approximately 3-4 hours per workshop, including review of instructor guide, travel and class time
