
The Tarrant Area Food Bank Community Garden Program is an initiative in which communities at risk of hunger and malnutrition are guided and inspired to grow their own produce. This program offers creative and simple solutions to improve access to nutritious food in our service area.
Volunteers are invited to help at workdays in our Learning Garden, 3251 Sappington Place, Fort Worth, TX 76116. No prior experience is required, however volunteers should feel comfortable lifting, bending, stooping and working in outside weather conditions.
Please dress for the weather in layers of clothing that can get dirty. Wear close-toed shoes or boots. Hats, sunglasses, sunscreen and bug spray are also recommended.
Volunteer roles include but are not limited to:
- Weeding
- Watering
- Planting
- Harvesting
- Composting
- Seed starting
Individuals as young as 10 years old may volunteer in the Learning Garden; however, ages 10-12 years old MUST have at least 1 adult volunteering with every 2 children & ages 13-15 years old MUST have at least one adult volunteering with every 5 youth.
If your schedule changes and you are not able to attend this event, please un-register so someone else can sign up. We have limited spaces available for social distancing so we need all of our spaces filled by those who are able to attend.
We are not able to accommodate court ordered service hours through this opportunity.
NEW SAFETY PROCEDURES
For the safety of our volunteers and staff, garden workdays will be implementing social distancing practices and utilizing personal protective equipment, following guidance from federal, state and local authorities.
Before participating in the workday, all staff and volunteers will have their temperature checked with a contactless thermometer and complete a health screen form. Anyone registering a fever or presenting symptoms of COVID-19 will not be allowed to participate in the workday. Masks will be required during the garden workdays. If you are feeling unwell please do not come to volunteer.
TAFB Will Provide:
- Hand washing stations
- Hand sanitizer
- Sanitizing wipes
- Disposable gloves
Volunteers are Encouraged to Bring Their Own:
- Personal face mask (disposable or reusable cloth)
- Garden gloves
- Bandana or towel (for wetting and keeping cool)
- Water
TAFB will have extra disposable face masks and garden gloves available for volunteers to use, if needed.
