FAQs
Thank you for your interest in volunteering at Tarrant Area Food Bank. The sections below cover some of the most commonly asked questions about TAFB volunteer opportunities. If you have any additional questions, feel free to contact us by email.
General Questions:
What measures are your staff taking to minimize the risk of spreading COVID-19?
With safety measures issued by our local authorities and the risk that COVID-19 brings, we are no longer able to openly recruit volunteers in our Distribution Center from the public sector. At this time, all of our current and future Distribution Center volunteer shifts through September 2020 will be cancelled with the hope to reschedule once we are cleared to open our doors to the public for assistance.
However, many of our partner agencies and farmers markets are still in need of volunteers at their remote sites. All of our partners are adhering to strict guidelines with sanitation and social distancing to stay in alignment with COVID-19 safety precautions, including transitioning to drive-thru distributions, frequently cleaning, etc.
Many of you have asked us, how can I help if I cannot volunteer? In practicing both social distancing and staying home to slow down the possible spread of the virus, we need your support monetarily. If you can give, please donate. Please be assured we will open our doors back for our dedicated volunteers as soon as we get the proper clearance from state and local health officials.
Do I need to sign up to volunteer ahead of time?
Yes. All volunteers must sign up in advance. We plan projects and assign staff based on the number of volunteers scheduled. Due to scheduling capacity, we may be unable to accommodate walk-in volunteers.
How do I sign up to volunteer?
Individuals or families: View available opportunities on our Volunteer page and follow the link to Respond Individually.
Groups: View available opportunities on our Volunteer page, follow the registration link to view available volunteer shifts/events and select Respond as a Team.
Are volunteer opportunities available for youth? What is the minimum age?
Yes! Opportunities for children as young as 8 years old are available. Minimum age requirements vary program by program. Age requirements will be noted in each event.
Children ages 8-13 require one adult chaperone for every one to three children volunteering. Children ages 14-15 require one adult chaperone for every one to 10 children volunteering. Children ages 16 and up do not require adult supervision during volunteer shifts.
Do I need a background check or special qualifications to volunteer?
Background checks are only required for volunteers who would like to volunteer for the Cooking Matters program. Some volunteer opportunities do require additional training. Training details will be listed along with the specific volunteer opportunity.
